Theatre in Education
A FREE professional development opportunity for Teachers
Are you interested in helping your students express themselves through creative activities and encouraging dialogue around issues relevant to their lives? K-12 teachers are invited to participate in a professional development workshop on “Theatre in Education”, facilitated by Sarah Hart, PhD Student in Performance Studies at UC Davis, and bilingual educator. This FREE program will enable teachers of any subject to incorporate theatre activities into their classrooms, encouraging a learning atmosphere that is dynamic and collaborative; and benefits learners of all kinds! By the end of these workshops, participating teachers will be able to design and facilitate a Theatre in Education lesson plan for their specific classroom contexts.
Theatre in Education is a proven catalyst for intellectual, social, physical and emotional learning. In these workshops, we will explore a range of techniques for stimulating communication, motivation, imagination, trust and self-confidence of both students and teachers as co-learners. During the first weekend, Theatre in Education methodologies will be taught through sample exercises, case studies, relevant texts and critical discussion. Teachers will then design proposals for lesson plans; adapting the techniques learned to the needs and interests of their own classrooms. The second weekend, teachers will hone their lesson plans and facilitate a 30-minute sample activity, using our workshop as a lab to test their ideas.
Sign up now for ONE of the workshops, in either Fall, Winter, or Spring quarter. Each workshop sequence will consist of 11 teaching hours, over 2 weekends: Saturdays 10am-5pm, Sundays 10am-2pm. Workshops will be held at the University of California Davis Department of Theatre and Dance. This is a FREE opportunity, open until all 10 available spaces are filled.
Fall: October 6-7, November 10-11
