Between Spaces Symposium,
University of Chichester, June 29th – 30th 2017
Start: Thurs 29th, 12.00 p.m. end: Fri 30th, 5.30 p.m.
Venue: Showroom Theatre, University of Chichester, Bishop Otter Campus, College Lane, PO19 6PE
Booking is now open for this two-day symposium that develops cross-disciplinary dialogues instigated via the University of Chichester’s ‘Performing Place’ symposium series (2013-15) in which human-environment and place-based engagements were explored by artists and academics from the fields of dance, performance, architecture, human geography, anthropology and cultural studies.
Between Spaces extends this interdisciplinary discourse and develops shared interests in everyday performativity, exploring how lived environments are performed through everyday acts and how such sites perform themselves through tropes of ruralism, tourism, civic organisation, representation, power and control.
The symposium theme is informed by intellectual initiatives arising from the ‘spatial turn’ (Rendell 2006) within the humanities and social sciences that prioritise and valorise epistemologies of spatialised and lived experience. Drawing on Soja’s notion of ‘third space’ Between Spaces explores a ludic space between disciplinary constraints in which ideas, practices and methods can be explored and employed in experimental and creative ways. The symposium incorporates research papers, interactive workshops, lecture-demonstrations, guided walks and performance formats.
Phil Smith, Katie Beswick, Nic Sandiland and Yael Flexer, Sara Wookey, Mary Gearey, Beatrice Jarvis, Leslie Satin, Vicky Hunter, Claudia Brazzale, James Layton, Rebecca McCutcheon, Victoria Bianchi, Julie Brixey Williams, Libby Worth, Shirley Chubb, Andrew Wilford, Louise Platt, Ellen Jeffrey, Sara Giddens, Daniela Perazzo, Sabine Zahn, Beth Weinstein, Charlotte Veal, Sara Maani, Barbara Erber, Heike Salzer, Anna Baer.
