NYU Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint an innovative and accomplished professor of Directing for its dynamic Theater program; this is an open-rank arts professorship, non-Tenure Track. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play an integral role in cultivating a rich liberal arts curriculum in a research university environment. We are looking for a directing artist/educator who has a strong professional profile, including administrative experience and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching and mentoring. The NYUAD Theater Program balances practical training with rigorous academic study and takes a global view of theater and the arts.  We aim to produce theater artists and scholars who are engaged citizens of the world. We prize a collaborative, inter-cultural, interdisciplinary approach in all aspects of our work, including curriculum development and theater-making. We seek to establish theater and performance as vibrant and key components in the cultural and intellectual life of the University and the community, and provide opportunities for collaboration and exchange with artists across the region and beyond.


Candidates for this position should hold an MFA or equivalent degree and/or have extensive professional directing experience, as well as five years of experience teaching at the university level or in theater training programs. We seek candidates from around the world who also possess some combination of the following: a broad range of directing experience; a resume that includes collaboration with playwrights; expertise in the areas of devised theater or performance; experience with global, including non-Western, theater; and an investment in transnational, emergent, or hybrid forms and practices.  Previous experience working in international or intercultural contexts/environments will be especially valued.  The successful candidate will be expected to mentor a diverse body of students, advise senior capstone projects, and direct student productions at our exciting and well-appointed new Arts Center, which houses a number of exceptional venues, offering multiple, diverse opportunities for staging.


The terms of employment are very competitive. Appointments are multi-year with the opportunity for renewal, pending budgetary approval. The appointment begins on September 1, 2017.
