by Thomas JM Wilson
September 2016 sees the official release of Juggling Trajectories: Gandini Juggling 1991-2015, the first major publication on the history and work of pioneering British contemporary circus company Gandini Juggling. Written by Thomas JM Wilson (Rose Bruford College), Juggling Trajectories maps the nature and growth of this prolific and innovative company from 1991 to 2015. Juggling Trajectories is over 400-pages long, contains over 150 photos, and is printed in full-colour throughout.
Juggling Trajectories provides the first detailed examination of the nature of this innovative company and their work. It covers the breadth of Gandini Juggling’s diverse output, examining not only Gandini Juggling’s cutting-edge experiments that blend juggling with other art forms, but also their spectacular street art events, virtuoso juggling to music, and theatrically-charged performances.
Juggling Trajectories takes a distinctive approach, providing a catalogue of over 25 of Gandini Juggling’s major performances, alongside accounts charting the the development of their varied working practices, and accompanied by several essays examining key features of the company’s work. Supported by an extensive array of full-colour photographs and contributions from many of the company’s key collaborators, this book is a uniquely rich and detailed insight into Gandini Juggling’s ground-breaking approach to circus.
For over two decades Gandini Juggling have been one of the world’s most prolific circus companies. Founded with the aim of fusing juggling and dance, they have continually pushed the artistic and technical boundaries of juggling, resulting in performances that delight, astound and defy easy categorisation. Lyn Gardner (The Guardian) notes, “Gandini Juggling, not just leaders in their field but trail blazers who have reinvented the relationship between contemporary theatre, dance and circus.”
