EcoMaterialisms Collective: Scales of Matter(ing)

By

I’d like to invite you to participate in a UC-wide reading group being organized by the EcoMaterialisms Collective (EMC), which was started at UC Irvine and hosted a grad student conference last Spring that far surpassed my expectations. I’m excited that there will be another conference in the Spring of 2016 since last year’s meeting felt more like an opportunity to workshop ideas/concepts than anything else, making it both enjoyable and useful. You can get a better sense of last year’s meeting by clicking here.

While last year there was a group of students at UC Irvine who were reading together, this year the plan is to have students from across the UCs reading from the same syllabi each quarter leading up to the conference. So far, we have students from four UCs including Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, and Santa Barbara, which is really exciting as more schools might be joining in as this gets going.

This year’s theme is tentatively "Scales of Matter(ing)," where we progress from histories and theories of the organism, of ecologies, and of cosmologies through the fall, winter, and spring quarters respectively. I’m attaching a syllabus that was put together by James Goebel, a fourth year student at UC Irvine who helped lead the EMC last year. Winter and Spring quarter syllabi will come later.

Please take a look at the syllabus and let me know if you are interested in reading from it this quarter, or even if you are just interested in general, by filling out your information here. Please feel free to share this with any other departments or graduate groups that may be interested.

Take care,

Marie
