"Ancient Doublespeak: The Invention of a Rhetorical Genre"

Prof. Laurent Pernot

Thursday, April 23rd 4:30 P.M.-6:00 P.M.

912 Sproul Hall

This talk will explore examples of doublespeak from various historical contexts, focusing most specifically on Greek rhetorical speeches about Rome in the Roman Empire. Ancient Greek rhetoric provides us with strong examples and unique theoretical tools to understand the phenomenon of doublespeak in political contexts across places and time.
