The talk is based on Dr. El Shakry’s current book project, titled Theorizing the Soul: Self and Psyche in Twentieth Century Egypt. This book will trace the development of discourses of psychoanalysis and subjectivity in post-war Egypt as part of the transnational history of ideas and comparative social history. An essay from the project titled “The Arabic Freud: the unconscious and the modern subject” was published in the Journal of Modern Intellectual History, and is included in this announcement as a background reading.
